Anyone looking to light one up during this year’s Passover festival can do so without worry of keeping kosher.

That’s according to a leading Orthodox rabbi who decreed marijuana can be both smoked or consumed during the eight day Jewish festival requiring strict dietary restrictions, reports The Times of Israel.

The pro-marijuana group Siach, who asked if the plant could be allowed for its healing properties, recently presented Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky with the leaves of a cannabis plant

Rabbi Kanievskey is considered a top authority of ultra-orthodox Jewish law, and after smelling the leaves, he determined they gave off a healing smell.

Kanievskey and another top orthodox authority then gave the plant a special blessing, allowing Jews from all religious backgrounds to partake.

There is, however, a catch.

Under normal circumstances cannabis would belong to the kitniyot food group of legumes, which would be strictly banned during the Passover holiday for Ashkenazi Jews.

Furthermore, typically any recreational drug use would also be considered banned as well.

But according to this new decree, if the plant is being used for medical purposes it turns out that everything is, indeed, kosher.
