1) FreeRTOS V7.5.0 Has Been Released

FreeRTOS V7.5.0 was released today, and is available for immediate free download from http://www.FreeRTOS.org

V7.5.0 is a major upgrade that includes multiple scheduling and efficiency improvements, new ports, and some new API functions:

Headline changes:

+ Multiple scheduling and efficiency improvements.
+ Core kernel files now pass PC-Lint static checking, including Lint's MISRA rule checking, without outputting any warnings. Information on the test conditions will be provided on the FreeRTOS website.

New API functions:

+ uxTaskGetSystemState() http://www.freertos.org/uxTaskGetSystemState.html
+ xQueueOverwrite() http://www.freertos.org/xQueueOverwrite.html
+ xQueueOverwriteFromISR()
+ xQueuePeekFromISR()

The following ports and demos, which were previously available separately, are now incorporated into the main FreeRTOS zip file download:

+ ARM Cortex-A9 IAR
+ ARM Cortex-A9 ARM compiler
+ Renesas RZ (includes FreeRTOS+FAT SL in the demo)
+ Microsemi SmartFusion2 (includes FreeRTOS+FAT SL in the demo)

2) New DOS Compatible FAT File System

FreeRTOS+FAT SL is a robust, market proven, DOS compatible, proprietary and supported FAT file system. It has been graciously donated by HCC Embedded to Real Time Engineers Ltd for use with FreeRTOS or in bare metal systems. HCC Embedded are the embedded industry's file system pioneers, and we are grateful to them for this valuable contribution to the FreeRTOS+ ecosystem.

FreeRTOS+FAT SL is intricately engineered to minimise both Flash and RAM footprint, allowing the same code base to be used across a wide range of 8, 16 and 32-bit MCUs. Other products in the file system family include both high performance and true fail-safe designs.

FreeRTOS V7.5.0 already includes three demo applications that make use of FreeRTOS+FAT SL. These are a new Windows simulator demo, the SmartFusion2 demo, and the Renesas RZ demo.

3) Twitter feed

We are bowing to pressure and replacing the FreeRTOS RSS feed with a Twitter feed.

It is fair to say the initial uptake has not been strong, but I would recommend signing up to follow #real_FreeRTOS to receive more timely notifications of significant events than provided by this rather intermittent newsletter. A shortened sign up line follows:

4) embTCP

embTCP support has been extended to a range of PIC32 microcontrollers. embTCP is a low cost and fully featured TCP/IP library that incorporates FreeRTOS. Download a demo that runs on the PIC32 Ethernet starter kit:
