A tsunami warning for was also issued for Hawaii. That warning was downgraded to an advisory on Sunday, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said.

At least 100,000 people in Hawaii were ordered to move from the shoreline to higher ground late on Saturday, but the first waves were less forceful than had been feared and no damage was initially reported.

Most of the waves measured on West Coast were relatively small. Dennis Sinnot of the Institute of Ocean Science, said tide stations are being monitored, the highest wave recorded was 69 cm on Langara Island, "but right now things seem to be settling down at all of our sites."

Gary Coons, the MLA for North Coast, said residents in Sandspit reported a large swell of more than two metres about 90 minutes after the quake. “I don’t know if there was any damage – nobody is down at the docks right now, they have gone to higher ground.”
