High puck- possession, offensive defensemen like Gardiner have the puck on their stick a lot by definition. The more amount of time a player has the puck, the more likely they are to make a mistake like giving the puck away. Offensive players also make more mistakes and give the puck away because they make higher risk plays.

If a player makes a good breakout pass to leave the zone no one notices because it’s expected. You see it many times, effortlessly every game. If a player turns the puck over you notice it because it’s not the norm. This is why the eye test isn’t always good. Giveaways are bad, yes (obviously), but they’re happening for the above reasons.
