An NDP candidate in Nova Scotia has suddenly resigned from the federal election campaign amid a controversy over comments he allegedly made about the Middle East on Facebook.

Morgan Wheeldon was the NDP's official candidate in Kings-Hants, but by Monday morning he had exited the race and the party's website had scrubbed any mention of him.

Wheeldon allegedly said Israel intended to "ethnically cleanse the region" in a Facebook post in August 2014.
