NATO and Russian Counter-Piracy Naval Forces Meet in the Gulf of Aden

On Saturday 25 May, a delegation from the Russian Federation Navy ship (RFS) NEUSTRASHIMIY paid a visit to ITS SAN MARCO, NATO’s counter piracy flagship in the Indian Ocean, to exchange views on counter piracy activities in the Gulf of Aden.

NATO Counter-Piracy Task Group Commander Rear Admiral Antonio Natale met with Captain First Rank Ivan Kovalyov, the Russian Task Group Commander, currently embarked on board RFS NEUSTRASHIMIY. This was the third time in the last six months that NATO and the Russian Federation Navy conducted such meetings at sea.

“We are happy to continue to build upon our track record of cooperation with the Russian Navy,” said Rear Admiral Natale, reflecting on the meeting. “NATO members and Russia share important common interests and face common security challenges that can be best addressed jointly, including counter-piracy. Each of these meetings contribute to the improvement of interoperability between NATO and Russian units and thus to our ability to increase security in this part of the world.”

Earlier this month, the NATO RUSSIA Council met at the level of Chiefs of Staff in Brussels and gave a positive assessment of the level of military cooperation overall. Deputy Chief of the Russian General Staff, General Alexander Postnikov-Streltsov, endorsed this and stated that Russia would be happy to promote the same type of cooperation in relation to NATO’s Operation ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR, counter-terrorism mission in the Mediterranean, as it does with the Indian Ocean counter-piracy mission.
