Canada's once beefy beef industry is shrinking, decreasing 25% between 2006 and 2014. That's partly because profits hit historic lows after the Mad Cow Disease crisis of 2013, forcing many farmers to close up shop.
A smaller industry means higher prices for consumers. The cost of beef has risen 44% in the last four years.
Canada's cattle herds have been on the decline for more than a decade, largely because of the skyrocketing costs of feed as more corn is used for government-subsidized ethanol production, Grier said.
