Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne announced on Monday he was looking for $400-million in government aid for a $2-billion overhaul of a Windsor, Ont., minivan plant,
Canadian taxpayers should remember that Chrysler has yet to repay $1.2-billion of the $2.9-billion it received in loans as part of the bailouts of GM and Chrysler. Now it wants more money. The argument is that it costs more to build cars in Canada, due in part to higher operating costs and higher wage rates. A $400-million subsidy would help offset the higher costs, including auto workers’ wages paid under contracts with Unifor, the successor to the Canadian Auto Workers.
There is certainly little chance that Ontario’s Premier, Kathleen Wynne, would balk at picking up half of Mr. Marchionne’s $400-million opening demand. The province, after all, recently came up with $200-million to support a $4-billion Cisco Canada investment in the province.
