Ontario's Department of Education distanced itself on Monday from a former deputy minister accused of making and distributing child pornography.

Toronto police have charged Benjamin Levin following an investigation that involved the London Police Service and authorities in New Zealand.

Levin is a professor and the Canada Research Chair in Education Leadership and Policy at the University of Toronto’s Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, who served as Ontario’s deputy education minister between 2004 and 2007. He also served in a similar capacity in Manitoba between 1999 and 2002.

According to the Canadian Press, Levin recently acted as part of Premier Kathleen Wynne’s transition team when she moved from MPP to the Premier's Office upon being chosen to replace outgoing Dalton McGuinty earlier this year.
